CBSL Daily Price Report: Mixed Trends in Sri Lankan Commodity Markets on 09 September 2026

COLOMBO, 09 September 2026 – The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) today released its Daily Price Report for 09 September 2026, offering a crucial snapshot of commodity price movements across key markets. The report highlights a day of mixed trends in the Sri Lankan food market, with notable fluctuations in the prices of essential vegetables, fish, and other commodities, largely influenced by supply dynamics.

Vegetable Prices See Diverse Movements

Consumers observed varied price changes in the vegetable sector. In the Pettah market, the price of Beans saw an increase, climbing from Rs. 400.00 to Rs. 450.00 per kilogram. This upward trend is attributed to a limited supply originating from the Welimada area.

Conversely, several other popular vegetables experienced price declines. Carrot prices in the Dambulla market fell from Rs. 240.00 to Rs. 195.00 per kilogram, primarily due to favourable supply conditions from Nuwara Eliya and Bandarawela regions. Similarly, Tomato prices in Dambulla continued their downward trajectory, decreasing from Rs. 355.00 to Rs. 320.00 per kilogram, buoyed by robust supply from Hanguranketha and Sigiriya areas.

Green Chilli also became more affordable, with prices dropping in both Pettah (from Rs. 450.00 to Rs. 350.00) and Dambulla (from Rs. 355.00 to Rs. 315.00) markets. This significant decline is a direct result of favourable supply from the Puttalam area, easing the burden on household budgets.

Fish Market: Paraw Prices Decline

The fish market saw some relief for consumers, particularly with the wholesale price of Paraw declining in the Peliyagoda market. Prices dropped from Rs. 1,600.00 to Rs. 1,400.00 per kilogram. This favourable movement is credited to an improved supply from the Southern coastal area, indicating better fishing yields.

Other Essential Commodities: Onion Down, Coconut Up

Among other key household staples, the price of Local Red Onion in the Dambulla market declined notably, moving from Rs. 310.00 to Rs. 245.00 per kilogram. This reduction is attributed to a favourable supply arriving from Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, and Mannar areas.

However, Coconut prices experienced an increase in the Dambulla market, rising from Rs. 115.00 to Rs. 130.00 per nut. This rise is linked to a limited supply originating from the Kurunegala area, suggesting potential challenges for coconut farmers or distributors in that region.

The Daily Price Report provides essential transparency into Sri Lanka’s commodity markets, helping both consumers and businesses navigate the fluctuating economic landscape. These daily insights from the Central Bank are vital for understanding the factors influencing food prices and overall inflation trends in the country.
