COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – 18 September 2026 – Vidullanka PLC (CSE: VLL) today announced a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy landscape, confirming the commercial grid connection of its first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility. This development, under its joint venture Storex (Pvt) Limited, marks a crucial step in enhancing national grid stability and supporting the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources.
The announcement, made in terms of Section 8 of the Listing Rules of the Colombo Stock Exchange, detailed the operationalization of a 10MW / 40MWh BESS unit and provided an update on the Group’s extensive national BESS portfolio, which is poised to become the country’s largest.
Pioneering Grid Connection Through Storex (Pvt) Limited
The newly commissioned 10MW / 40MWh BESS facility represents the first unit in a larger 12-facility portfolio, amounting to a total capacity of 120MW / 480MWh, being developed under Storex (Pvt) Limited. This joint venture sees Vidullanka PLC holding a 49% equity stake, partnering with WindForce PLC.
These 12 strategic BESS facilities are strategically located across various grid substations in Sri Lanka. According to Vidullanka PLC, the remaining 11 facilities under Storex (Pvt) Limited are currently in advanced stages of completion and are slated for progressive commissioning, promising a rapid expansion of energy storage capabilities nationwide.
Sri Lanka’s Largest Utility-Scale Battery Storage Footprint Takes Shape
Beyond the Storex portfolio, Vidullanka PLC is further solidifying its commitment to energy storage through an additional 10MW / 40MWh BESS facility located at Vavunathivu. This project is being co-developed under its existing joint venture, Solar Universe (Pvt) Limited.
Together, these initiatives establish an impressive aggregate utility-scale battery storage footprint of 130MW / 520MWh across 13 distinct locations in Sri Lanka. This combined capacity represents the largest energy storage development undertaken in the country to date, positioning Vidullanka PLC at the forefront of Sri Lanka’s energy transformation.
Strategic Impact: Enhancing Grid Stability and Revenue Resilience
The operational and strategic implications of these BESS facilities are multifaceted, promising substantial benefits for both the national energy grid and Vidullanka PLC’s financial health:
- Grid Stability and Renewable Integration: These BESS systems are designed to operate with battery discharge capability, providing critical fast-frequency response, peak-load shaving, and voltage regulation services to the National System Operator (NSO). This significantly enhances the grid’s absorption capacity for intermittent solar energy, thereby minimizing renewable curtailment and ensuring a more stable power supply.
- Revenue Resilience: BESS operations are structured to generate revenue through capacity charges, offering stable, non-weather-dependent cash flows. This strategic diversification provides a crucial hedge for the Group’s broader generation portfolio against hydrological variations, ensuring greater financial stability and predictability.
Vidullanka PLC’s progressive rollout of these advanced BESS facilities underscores its commitment to modernizing Sri Lanka’s energy infrastructure, fostering greater energy security, and driving the nation’s transition towards a more sustainable and resilient power sector.
