Colombo, Sri Lanka – 18 September 2026 – Leading Sri Lankan renewable energy developer, WindForce PLC (CSE: WIND), has announced the commissioning of two significant projects: the nation’s first grid-scale, standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and a 5 MW floating solar power plant. These projects mark a substantial expansion of the company’s clean energy portfolio, elevating its total generation capacity to approximately 268 MW.
The commissioning, effective today, 18th September 2026, reinforces WindForce PLC’s commitment to advancing Sri Lanka’s renewable energy landscape and strengthening its national grid infrastructure.
Pioneering Grid-Scale Battery Energy Storage
The newly commissioned 10 MW/40 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility, located in Anuradhapura, is a groundbreaking development for Sri Lanka. Developed through StoreX (Pvt) Ltd, this project is a joint venture with Vidullanka PLC and represents the first of its kind in the country to operate as a grid-scale, standalone storage solution.
This Anuradhapura BESS facility is the initial phase of a larger strategic initiative. WindForce PLC plans to develop a total of 13 BESS facilities, which will collectively provide an impressive 130 MW/520 MWh of energy storage capacity. These systems are crucial for enhancing grid stability, integrating intermittent renewable sources more effectively, and providing reliable power supply across the nation.
Unveiling a 5 MW Floating Solar Power Plant
Concurrently, WindForce PLC has also commissioned a 5 MW floating solar power plant. This innovative project was developed by Diyajanani (Pvt) Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of WindForce PLC. Floating solar technology offers a sustainable solution for generating electricity by utilising otherwise unutilized water bodies, reducing land-use concerns often associated with traditional ground-mounted solar farms.
The new floating solar plant is projected to generate approximately 9 GWh of clean, renewable energy annually, contributing significantly to Sri Lanka’s energy mix and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Strategic Growth and Future Outlook
These latest commissions follow previous announcements from WindForce PLC, including the award of the BESS projects on 13th May 2026, and the execution of the Standardised Power Purchase Agreement (SPPA) for the floating solar project on 28th November 2025. The swift execution and commissioning of these projects underscore the company’s operational efficiency and strategic vision.
With the addition of these BESS and floating solar projects, WindForce PLC has solidified its position as a frontrunner in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy sector. The increase in total generation capacity to approximately 268 MW marks a significant milestone in the company’s journey towards a sustainable and energy-independent future for the island nation.
